Tympanoplasty Or Ear Drum Repair

Eardrum repair refers to one or more surgical procedures that are done to correct a tear or other damage to the eardrum (tympanic membrane). ENT Specialist shall advice the right treatment for you after a thorough examination. A ruptured eardrum - also known as a perforated eardrum or a tympanic membrane perforation can lead to complications such as middle ear infections and hearing loss. It may also require surgery to repair the damage to the eardrum.

Indications For Ear Drum Repair

The eardrum (tympanic membrane) is between the outer ear and the middle ear. The eardrum vibrates when sound waves strike it. When the eardrum is damaged or has a hole in it, hearing may be reduced and ear infections may be more likely. Causes of holes or openings in the eardrum include:

A bad ear infection
Sticking something inside the ear canal
Trauma

If a perforation has been present for more than 3 months without infection or drainage it is unlikely to close by itself. At this point, the ENT specialist may recommend an eardrum repair.

Procedure Of Tympanoplasty

During the surgery, the eardrum is lifted up like a trap door and the material used to repair the hole (called a tympanic membrane graft) is slipped behind the eardrum. Then the eardrum is put back where it started and the hole is patched from behind. The graft material is supported from behind with some packing material which slowly dissolves over the next 2 to 3 months. During this time, the eardrum heals over the graft and resumes a normal appearance. When the packing is all dissolved, the hearing is restored to normal.

Diagnosis Of Ruptured Ear Drum

If you have any of the symptoms of a ruptured eardrum, the doctor will do an otoscopic exam. An otoscope is an instrument with a light that's used to look inside the ear. In most cases, if there is a hole or tear in the eardrum, the doctor will be able to see it.

Follow Up After Surgery

After the procedure, a dressing will be placed inside your ear canal and cotton wool padding will be put over your ear and held in place with a bandage. You may also have some stitches. The doctor will schedule an appointment for a check-up a few days after the surgery.
